!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A cyclist has several broken bones and a punctured lung after he says he was hit by the overhanging load of wooden pallets on a pickup truck on the Sea to Sky.

Amateur athlete and running blogger Todd Nickel was riding from the downtown Vancouver area on Monday morning, making it as far as Furry Creek before he was hit from behind.

“This hit me from behind going 80 km/h [50mph],” he writes in a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with the overhanging load.

Fuck that guy sideways. This kind of crap makes me so mad. It’s just irresponsible, lazy, and ignorant.

WTF dude... oversize loads go parallel to the vehicle, not perpendicular.

I’m going to go out on a [tree] limb here: I think the driver had it tied to the back rack with that dinky rope.

Doesn’t excuse it being a shit and unacceptable tie down.

The man has a rack. Specifically for this purpose. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to fog mirrors, let alone drive.

Stunningly irresponsible both to load that way (or to let it slip) , and then not to pay attention to what’s going on on your right.

Also does pallet mean something different in Canada?

Agreed.

It’s the media, they wouldn’t know a plank/board if it slapped them in the back of the head (at 80kph) .

One of the reasons I have a hard time enjoying road biking. I feel much safer flying through the woods on a mountain bike. At least in that situation if I big piece  of wood knocks me out it’ll be my fault. And I’ll probably see it coming.

I think you’re right that it was probably originally over the cab, but I wouldn’t even be sure they had it tied down as opposed to thinking those little “horns” would keep it from sliding off. I’d imagine that at a standstill, it would be easy to feel like weight alone would prevent it from moving, without considering what wind and bumps might do.

This is too weird to even consider as a hazard. My biggest concerns have been motorists who are actively hostile (in Houston, mostly ) and even on roads with wide shoulders, the possibility of encountering a drunk driver going 30+ faster than me on country roads at night.

Sounds like he got off with $500 worth of tickets. :/

Pennies compared to I dunno, getting caught safely driving 20- 30kph over traffic flow? *eye roll*

It would be major negligence if that was the case though.

This route is rather isolated, quick-ish speeds on a winding road, only occasionally passing lanes, not much shoulder in places, and has the odd pull off every 5mi-10mi for tourist stuff and richie rich rich houses .

It’s a great cruising road but i t’s always the scene of incidents . Usually motorcyclists and cars speeding and loo sing control. A t 100km/ 60mi , Horseshoe Bay to Whistler i s typically policed and radar trapped more than any road I know in a stretch . Yet idiots still play and weekends are busy .

Yep, but given that this happened at all, I don’t think we can rule out major negligence...

I’ve made the trip up to Whistler, so I’m familiar with the route (at least as it was in 2012)

Perhaps I should have gone with “Criminally” instead of major. Looks like buddy got off with $500 worth of tickets from what local facespace is saying.

I'd have to consult CoFL on this, but hopefully the cyclist can sue for damages.

That’s the most idiotic loading of materials into a pickup I’ve ever seen. This includes scrappers, and people who stack 60 pallets.

It almost look like the material spun OFF his roof and then sideways... Look how little tension there is on the material left under the strap.

Oh likely, it’s debatable whether this should have criminally negligent as well though.

*One does not simply drive onto the S2S .* Especially loaded worse than a  Mr. Lahey and Randy break-up.
